WHAT IS METAVERSE?
Since October 28, 2021, when Facebook rebranded as Meta, the name “Metaverse” has been a hot topic of discussion. In some ways, the Metaverse means different things to different people, but it is evident that it is the next evolution of the Internet.
The Metaverse as seen in many movies in the past has been described as a 3d virtual reality space that can be accessed through personal terminals and virtual reality goggles. The 3D space appears to its user as an urban environment. For example, in “In Second Life” (Released in 2003) users can customize realistic avatars, meet with other players, create virtual properties and buy or exchange goods and services.
Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a recent letter to his employees “The next platform will be even more immersive- an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the Metaverse and it will touch every product we build”.
PROPERTIES OF THE METAVERSE
· Real-time rendered
· Interoperable
· Massively scaled
· 3D virtual worlds
· Unlimited number of users
· Continuity of data
WHAT WILL THE METAVERSE LOOK LIKE?
The movie Ready Player One is the best example out there of what the Metaverse could conceptually look like.
WHAT WILL POWER THE METAVERSE?
Metaverse will be powered by several forms of technology such as cloud infrastructure, software tools, platforms, applications, user-generated content, and hardware.
WHAT WILL METAVERSE BE USED FOR?
It will include various user experiences such as entertainment, gaming, commerce, social interactions, education, research, asset creation, etc.
The Metaverse isn’t going to be a one-company technology. It will be created by millions of developers each building out their part of it. In summary, the Metaverse is still being constructed brick by brick and everyone will contribute to its creation.
Though the Metaverse may seem like a distant dream, this stage is crucial for ensuring no one gets left out as the technologies mature.
