IN A COMPUTING CONTEXT, WHAT IS THE CLOUD?

At this point in the digital revolution, we're sure you've heard of the cloud in a computing context, and hopefully not just when discussing the weather.

The origin of the cloud in computing

Cloud computing was initially feared and perceived as mystical and dangerous, akin to something out of a fairy tale. There was also uncertainty about security and where it was located.

Most people are unaware that they are already using the cloud. They unknowingly consume cloud computing software and internet-based services. These services have supplanted computer storage and expensive servers used by businesses to store valuable information.

Businesses and individuals demanded more efficient storage of critical information, which gave rise to the cloud in computing. Cloud storage has achieved this, but it must be more secure, cost-effective, and manageable than servers or external hard drives.

The use of the cloud in computing

The benefit of the cloud is that you can access files and systems from anywhere as long as you have a solid, reliable internet connection. The cloud has more power than internal office networks, and you can buy as much cloud space as you need without running out.

Cloud computing deployment is done in several different ways considering the following:

·         Location of the cloud service hosting

·         Requirements for security

·         Customization options

·         Services for management

·         Online assistance

Cloud deployment can be classified into three types:

1. Public deployment

The services are provided off-site via the internet with public deployment, and while this cloud computing service is efficient, it is not as secure as private cloud services.

2. Private cloud services

Private computing networks, such as Microsoft Office 360, keep it running. This option provides greater security and control at a higher price.

3. Hybrid cloud services

A hybrid of public and private cloud services where needs are distributed across multiple options. This option saves money but has drawbacks, such as integration with other platforms.

The computing power of the cloud

Every minute, YouTube receives more than 500 hours of video footage that is uploaded to and accessed from the cloud. You're not hosting that video on your computer or a server at work; rather, the cloud is operating within a powerful computing context.

Last thoughts

What can the cloud do for you in terms of computing? Don't be afraid of the cloud because it works well and makes your business, schoolwork, or personal administration at home more efficient and safer.
